Freddie John
... plays Trombone
Freddie John, born in Sweden in 1949, started playing the trombone at the age of eleven. While still a teenager he began to get interested in New Orleans jazz. After his long stay in New Orleans from 1969-1970 Freddie has been playing with most of the leading New Orleans jazz bands in Europe, such as Sammy Rimington (England), Barry Martyn (England), White Eagle Jazzband (Germany), Les Haricots Rouges (France), Søren Houlind (Denmark), Sumpen Swingsters (Sweden).
He has extensively toured Europe and the United States, numerous times with legendary musicians from New Orleans, such as Percy Humphrey, Alvin Alcorn, Doc Cheatham Thomas Jefferson, Kid Sheik, John and Wendell Brunious, Sam Lee, Alton Purnell, Don Ewell and Freddie Kohlmann, as well as with New Orleans singers, such as Topsy Chapman, Juanita Brooks and Lillian Boutté.
Freddie is considered the number one trombone player in the New Orleans style in Europe but he masters a great variety of styles and has consequently also been a steady member of swing, rhythm & blues and even reggae bands. Studying and respecting his musical idols and influences he succeeded like very few musicians in Europe to develop his own distinctive style. The only thing predictable about Freddie’s playing is always its high quality.
