John Brunton was born in the Northern English town Burnley. He grew up in a musical family: His father played the saxophone and the clarinet, his brother bass. When he was nine years old he began playing the guitar. Later he studied at London University, where he played with different student bands. At the age of 23, after having attended a workshop run by Reginald Workman and John Abercrombie, he decided to become a professional musician.

In 1991 he moved to Munich, where he took private lessons with the American jazz musicians Neil Bacher and Michael Gerber. The years 1991-2006 were a busy and important time for John. He performed with numerous artists in different combinations and styles, amongst others with with Ernest Butler, George Greene, Chuck Henderson, Sava Medan, Gilby Karno, Dave Donahoe, Storyville Shakers, Leroy Jones, Gitanes Blonde.

Since 2006 he has been playing regularly with Pit Müller, Hot Stuff and the Creole Clarinets.

John has performed on many festivals in England, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany, such as Chichester Jazz Festival 2007 (England), Jazzwochen Burghausen 2006 and 2008, Kempten Jazzfrühling 2006, Davos-Jazzwoche 2007 and 2008 (Switzerland).

John is a brilliant accompanist with a bouncing swing and an impeccable harmonic sense. His solos stand out for their melodic lucidity.
